Beathea, 36, started 39 games over three seasons with the 49ers from 2014 to ’16.
“I played a child’s game for 27 years, 14 of them professionally,” Bethea wrote in a statement posted on social media. “I always knew this day would come, and now it is here.”
Bethea showed his appreciation to the 49ers in the post.
During his three seasons with the 49ers, Bethea had 240 tackles, five interceptions with two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He earned a spot on the NFC Pro Bowl team with the 49ers in 2014.
“Thank you to the York Family, the San Francisco 49ers, and the ‘9ers Faithful,” Bethea wrote.
Bethea began his career with eight years with the Indianapolis Colts. After his three years with the 49ers, he played two years with the Arizona Cardinals and one season with the New York Giants.
Bethea had a late-season workout with the Baltimore Ravens but did not play this season.
“I am forever grateful and blessed to have had the experiences I did,” Bethea wrote. “From a Super Bowl win to a Super Bowl loss and a 2-14 season.”
