A 23-year-old Louisville woman died in police custody shortly after being transported to the hospital, according to the Indiana State Police.

Ta’neasha Chappell, originally from Kentucky, was taken by ambulance from Jackson County Jail, in Brownstone, Ind., to Schneck Memorial Hospital in Seymour Friday, the ISP said in a press release Sunday.

She died that day.

Officials have not released a cause of death or disclosed why Chappell was initially hospitalized.

An autopsy and toxicology report is pending.

Chappell was arrested on May 26 after allegedly stealing more than $3,000 worth of merchandise from an outlet mall Ralph Lauren, then leading police on a car chase.

“She called every day telling us to get her out of there,” her mother, Lavita Mcclain, told WAVE. “‘Mama they’re going to kill me in here, they’re going to kill me in here,’ and she would always say ‘get me out of here if anything happens to me just know that they did it.’”

Chappell is survived by her 10-year-old daughter, Nevaeh, according to a GoFundMe.
