The family of a 22-year-old Minnesota man says he was trying to help a woman who was reportedly experiencing domestic violence when he was fatally shot after leaving his home late at night.
Cion Jordan, 22, died after being shot in St. Paul, Minnesota, on the night of July 29. Police continue to investigate the shooting, and no arrests have been announced.
Shooting Claimed Life of 22-Year-Old
According to the St. Paul Police Department, officers responded late on July 29 to reports of a shooting.
Jordan was one of two men who were shot during the incident.
Emergency responders transported him to Regions Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police have not publicly identified the second shooting victim or released information about any suspects.
The investigation remains active.
Family Says He Left Home to Help Someone
In an interview with local television station KSTP, Jordan’s mother, Malinda Aguilar, said her son left home shortly before midnight after receiving two phone calls asking for help.
According to Aguilar, both calls involved reports that a young woman had been assaulted.
She said Jordan believed the woman needed assistance and left home intending to help her.
Aguilar explained that her son was with another relative when the calls came in.
According to the family, Jordan initially decided not to get involved after the first call. However, something about the second call convinced him to leave.
His mother said she does not believe Jordan knew he might be walking into a dangerous or violent situation.
“He Was a Protector”
Aguilar described her son as someone who always looked out for others.
She said Jordan was protective by nature but was not someone who deliberately sought dangerous confrontations.
According to Aguilar, he had a special respect for women and was known for being kind and courteous.
She described him as “a gentleman” who simply wanted to help someone he believed was in trouble.
Family Believes Incident Stemmed From Domestic Violence
Although police have not released details about what led to the shooting, Aguilar told KSTP she believes the second shooting victim was the boyfriend of the woman Jordan had gone to help.
According to her understanding, that man had allegedly been assaulting the woman before Jordan became involved.
Police have not confirmed that account, and investigators have not publicly identified the second victim or described the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Mother Wants Answers
Despite losing her son, Aguilar said she is not focused on blaming the other people involved until investigators determine exactly what happened.
Instead, she questioned why the women involved allegedly contacted Jordan for help rather than calling law enforcement.
She also expressed frustration that, according to her, some of the women present at the scene had not been cooperating with investigators.
Police Examining Communications
Aguilar said detectives informed the family they are reviewing phone records, text messages, and social media communications connected to those involved in the incident.
According to her, investigators intend to examine every message exchanged among the people connected to the case as they work to determine exactly what occurred before the shooting.
Police have not publicly commented on the status of that aspect of the investigation.
Community Raising Money for Funeral
Following Jordan’s death, his stepfather created a GoFundMe campaign to help the family cover funeral and memorial expenses.
Family members have remembered Jordan as a compassionate young man whose desire to help others ultimately cost him his life.
Investigation Continues
The St. Paul Police Department has not announced any arrests, identified any suspects, or released additional details about the shooting.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Jordan’s death.
The case remains open, and anyone charged in the future would be presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
