A 21-year-old Louisiana man has been arrested after authorities say he fatally shot his mother multiple times outside her apartment complex in Metairie before fleeing the scene and crashing his vehicle a short distance away.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) identified the suspect as Nakee Collins, 21, of Shreveport, who has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his mother, Gloria Collins, 47.
Mother Found Shot in Apartment Parking Lot
According to JPSO spokesperson Sgt. Brandon Veal, deputies were dispatched at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, to the 6200 block of Riverside Drive after reports of a shooting at the Victorian Condominiums in Metairie.
When deputies arrived, they found Gloria Collins lying in the apartment complex parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders rushed her to University Medical Center in New Orleans, but despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office officially identified the victim as Gloria Collins, who lived at the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
Suspect Fled Before Crashing Vehicle
Investigators said Nakee Collins fled the scene immediately after the shooting in a vehicle.
However, only minutes later, he was involved in a traffic crash less than a mile away on Power Boulevard near the Interstate 10 exit ramp.
Photos from the crash scene showed one vehicle overturned before emergency crews returned it to an upright position while detectives processed the area.
Following the crash, deputies took Collins into custody without further incident.
He was transported to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Investigations Bureau in Harvey for questioning before being booked into jail.
Charged With Second-Degree Murder
Authorities charged Collins with second-degree murder in connection with his mother’s death.
As of Wednesday evening, he remained in custody without bail.
Investigators have not publicly disclosed what may have led to the fatal shooting, and detectives continue working to determine a motive.
Second Deadly Shooting on Riverside Drive in Less Than a Month
The homicide marks the second fatal shooting involving a woman on Riverside Drive within the past month, raising concerns among residents.
In late June, 21-year-old Sharde Cooper was shot in the same 6200 block of Riverside Drive. She died five days later from her injuries.
In that case, authorities arrested Kennedy George, 33, of Waggaman, charging him with second-degree murder.
According to Cooper’s relatives, George had allegedly been stalking her and had become increasingly obsessed with her in the months leading up to the shooting.
George remains jailed in Gretna on a $1.1 million bond while awaiting court proceedings.
Neighbor Remembers Victim
The latest shooting deeply affected residents of the apartment complex, including Katisha Cooper, the mother of Sharde Cooper.
Cooper, who returned home from work only to learn of another deadly shooting in the neighborhood, said she knew Gloria Collins personally.
She described the victim as a kind and well-liked member of the community.
“Everybody knew her. She was the sweetest lady,” Cooper said.
Investigation Continues
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office continues investigating the homicide and has not released additional information regarding a possible motive.
Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the case to cooperate with investigators as the criminal investigation moves forward.
As with all criminal cases, the charge against Nakee Collins is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
