A police investigation is underway in Dolton after officers chased a suspect who allegedly fired shots early Monday morning, leading to an officer-involved shooting.
According to Dolton police, the incident began shortly after midnight when officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of 1320 E. Sibley Boulevard.
Police said they heard multiple gunshots around 12:05 a.m. Monday and arrived at the scene, where they observed a person taking cover as if attempting to avoid being hit by gunfire.
Investigators said another individual was seen leaving the area on a bicycle shortly after the shots were fired.
Officers followed the bicyclist as part of their investigation. During the pursuit, police said the person eventually abandoned the bicycle and fled on foot.
Authorities said the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly pointed a weapon toward officers. In response, a Dolton police officer fired shots at the suspect.
Police have not released the identity of the person involved or provided details about how many shots were fired.
Following the encounter, both the suspect and the officer were transported to nearby hospitals as a precautionary measure. Officials said both were treated and later released, and no injuries were reported.
A Dolton spokesperson initially reported that someone had been shot, but police later clarified that no one suffered injuries during the incident.
Authorities said a firearm was recovered at the scene.
The investigation remains active, and police said charges are pending as detectives continue reviewing evidence and determining what led to the shooting and confrontation.
