A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 494 in Bloomington, Minnesota, left one person dead early Saturday morning after a semi-truck collided with a Jeep following an earlier crash involving two SUVs, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The fatal collision happened around 4:18 a.m. on westbound I-494 near Highway 100. Authorities said the crash occurred in the far-right lanes of the highway.
Investigators reported that two SUVs were involved in the initial collision. A 25-year-old man driving a Honda CR-V and a 64-year-old man driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee were both traveling westbound when the vehicles crashed.
According to the State Patrol, the Honda CR-V was traveling in the far-right lane, while the Jeep was in the center-right lane before the collision. Officials have not yet released details about what caused the two vehicles to collide.
Following the impact, the Jeep came to rest in the left lane of the interstate facing toward the median. Moments later, a semi-truck traveling through the area struck the disabled Jeep, resulting in the third vehicle becoming involved in the crash.
The semi-truck was being driven by a 49-year-old man, according to investigators.
Authorities confirmed that the crash had a fatal outcome, but they have not yet identified the person who died. Officials also have not released information about whether any other drivers or passengers suffered injuries.
The names of those involved have not been made public as investigators continue working to notify family members and gather additional details.
The Minnesota State Patrol is leading the investigation. At this time, officials have released the location, timing, and general sequence of events but have not determined the exact cause of the initial SUV collision.
