Police in New York City are continuing to search for a woman accused of assaulting a 67-year-old woman in an unprovoked daytime attack in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens. The incident occurred nearly a month ago, and investigators are asking the public for help identifying the suspect.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the assault happened at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, near the intersection of 43rd Street and 47th Avenue, close to Lance Corporal Thomas P. Noonan Playground.
Victim Was Walking When Stranger Allegedly Attacked
Police said the 67-year-old victim was walking along the sidewalk when an unknown woman approached her from behind before stepping directly in front of her.
As the elderly woman attempted to move around the stranger, the suspect allegedly blocked her path again. Authorities said the encounter quickly escalated when the suspect suddenly slapped the victim across the face without any apparent provocation.
Investigators said the suspect also yelled profanity at the victim before fleeing the area on foot.
She was last seen running eastbound along 37th Avenue toward Greenpoint Avenue.
Victim Treated for Minor Injuries
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene shortly after the assault.
According to police, the 67-year-old woman suffered minor injuries and was treated at the location. She did not require transportation to a hospital.
Authorities described the incident as an apparently random and unprovoked assault.
Surveillance Images Released
The NYPD has released surveillance images of the woman believed to be responsible for the attack in hopes that someone will recognize her.
Police described the suspect as:
- A woman with a medium complexion
- Slim build
- Wearing a light-blue long-sleeved shirt
- Dark-colored pants
- Orange sneakers
- A pink non-religious head covering wrapped around her head
Investigators believe she fled toward Greenpoint Avenue immediately after the incident.
Reward Offered for Information
The NYPD is offering a reward of up to $3,500 for information that leads to the suspect’s arrest and indictment.

Assault Statistics in the 108th Precinct
The investigation is being handled by officers assigned to the 108th Precinct, which covers Sunnyside and parts of Long Island City.
According to the NYPD’s latest CompStat report, the precinct recorded 157 felony assaults through July 19, 2026, compared with 165 during the same period in 2025. That represents a 4.8% decrease in reported felony assaults year over year.
Police continue to investigate the assault and are asking anyone who may recognize the suspect or have information about the incident to come forward.
