An Ohio family is mourning the loss of a husband and father of four after a birthday celebration ended in tragedy when prosecutors say a 21-year-old Michigan man walked into a bar and fatally shot him in what authorities believe was a random act of violence.
According to court records, Colton Zane Smith, 21, of Michigan, has been charged with one count of murder with a firearm specification in the death of Robert “Rob” Russell, 39, of Chesterland, Ohio.
Investigators have said there is no evidence that Russell knew the alleged gunman before the shooting.
Shooting at Put-in-Bay Bar
According to a news release from the Put-in-Bay Police Department, officers and emergency medical personnel responded shortly after midnight on July 23 to Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille on Delaware Avenue after receiving reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found Russell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Paramedics immediately attempted life-saving measures, but Russell died at the scene from his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that no other patrons or employees were injured during the incident.
Multi-Agency Search Leads to Arrest
Following the shooting, Put-in-Bay police requested assistance from the Ottawa County Major Crimes Unit and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol also assisted by providing aerial support during the search for the suspect.
Authorities said Smith was located and taken into custody at approximately 3:40 a.m., just a few hours after the shooting.
Police stated that no additional suspects are being sought.
Victim Was Celebrating His Birthday
The Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office later identified the victim as Robert Russell of Chesterland, Ohio.
According to Russell’s family, he and his wife, Lindsay, had traveled to Put-in-Bay to celebrate his 40th birthday, which was scheduled for the following day.
Instead of returning home after the celebration, the family was left grieving his sudden death.
Family Says There Was No Argument Before Shooting
Russell’s cousin, Carly Konieczny, told local media that the family is still trying to come to terms with the tragedy.
She recalled waking up to a message from her mother asking her to call immediately and said the news has been difficult for everyone to process.
According to Konieczny, Russell had no known relationship with Smith, leading the family to believe the attack was completely random.
Russell’s sister, Christi Russell, also said there had been no altercation before the shooting.
“He was simply enjoying a night out with his wife,” she said.
Remembered as a Devoted Husband and Father
Family members described Russell as a deeply faithful Christian who dedicated his life to his family.
He is survived by his wife and four children — three sons and one daughter.
His cousin said Russell’s faith influenced every part of his life, including his work as a handyman.
“He was a guy of really deep faith,” Konieczny said. “That was central to everything about him, even what he did for his job.”
Wife Shares Emotional Tribute
In a statement shared with local media, Russell’s wife remembered her husband as the foundation of their family.
She described him as a constant source of strength, comfort, perseverance, and unwavering faith.
She also said he intentionally led and loved their children while teaching them to follow Christ every day.
“The void he leaves behind is immeasurable,” she said.
Bar Calls Shooting a ‘Senseless Act of Violence’
Following the fatal shooting, Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille temporarily closed its doors.
When the business later reopened, it issued a public statement describing the incident as a “senseless act of violence” and expressed sympathy for Russell’s family and loved ones.
Court Proceedings Continue
Smith made his first appearance in Ottawa County Municipal Court on July 23.
A judge set his bond at $1 million.
He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on July 31.
Prosecutors Say More Charges Are Possible
Ottawa County Prosecutor James VanEerten said the investigation is ongoing and indicated that additional charges could be filed after the case is presented to a grand jury.
Meanwhile, Russell’s family continues to mourn the loss of a devoted husband, loving father, and man of faith whose birthday celebration ended in an act of violence that investigators believe occurred without any apparent motive.
