A 16-year-old Pennsylvania boy has been charged with murder after authorities say he fatally shot a 17-year-old friend inside the victim’s home while several other teenagers were present.
According to the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, Jose Manuel Lopez III, 16, has been charged with:
- Third-degree murder
- Involuntary manslaughter
- Possession of a firearm by a minor
- Three counts of recklessly endangering another person
The charges stem from the shooting death of 17-year-old Wilfredo Garcia Jr. on July 18, 2026, in Columbia, Pennsylvania, a borough located about 85 miles west of Philadelphia.
Teen Was Spending the Evening With Friends
Authorities said Garcia was at his home in the 900 block of Plane Street on the night of the shooting.
His mother, Tamara Rosario, was also at the residence while Garcia spent the evening eating pizza and playing video games with friends.
Rosario later recalled that before she went to bed, her son wished her good night and told her he loved her.
Those were the final words she heard from him.
Mother Heard Gunshot Minutes Later
According to Rosario, she had been in bed for approximately 15 minutes when she suddenly heard a gunshot coming from another room in the house.
She immediately ran toward the sound and found her son sitting in a chair with his head resting on a table and suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Rosario quickly called 911 and remained with her son while waiting for emergency responders.
She later said she repeatedly asked him to squeeze her hand if he could still hear her.
According to Rosario, Garcia continued squeezing her fingers for a short time before eventually stopping, leaving her to realize he had died.
Police Found Victim Beyond Medical Help
Police received reports of the shooting at approximately 9:45 p.m.
Officers arrived at the residence and found Garcia unresponsive.
Despite their efforts to provide aid, authorities determined that the teenager could not be saved.
Investigators said several other people were inside the room when the firearm discharged, but no one else was injured.
Teen Initially Denied Holding Gun
During the investigation, detectives interviewed Lopez about the shooting.
According to the district attorney’s office, Lopez initially denied being inside the room when the gun was fired.
However, investigators said he later admitted that he had been holding the handgun when it discharged.
Authorities further allege Lopez acknowledged that he knew the firearm’s magazine was loaded before pointing the weapon at Garcia.
Investigators also stated that Lopez admitted his finger was on the trigger when the gun fired.
Multiple Interviews Conducted
Detectives said they conducted numerous interviews over more than a week with individuals who had been inside the home on the night of the shooting.
As part of the investigation, officers recovered two firearms from the residence.
Because Lopez is 16 years old, authorities noted that he was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing.
Suspect Held Without Bail
Lopez appeared before a judge for a preliminary arraignment on Tuesday, where he was denied bail.
He is currently being held at the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 11, 2026.
The criminal case remains pending as investigators continue examining the events that led to the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Wilfredo Garcia Jr. inside his family home.
