Child gives birth at the age of 11 and is reportedly Britain’s youngest mother

The family of an 11-year-old girl was left in absolute shock after the child gave birth to a baby in June 2021. After getting pregnant at the age of 10, the girl gave birth to her baby after 30 weeks of pregnancy and is possibly now the youngest mother in Britain. It was also reported that the family had no idea about the child being pregnant, and investigations are being conducted to find out the events that led to the girl becoming pregnant.

“It has come as a big shock,” a source who knows the family said, as quoted by The Sun. Both the mother and child are said to be doing well health-wise after the delivery. Expert help is being provided to the girl while social services and council chiefs are conducting investigations. “She’s now being surrounded by expert help. The main thing is that she and the baby are OK,” the source added. “There are questions around why people did not know. That is very worrying.”

When Sun doctor Carol Cooper spoke about the 11-year-old girl’s pregnancy, she said, “This is the youngest mother I’ve heard of.” Incidents, where people get pregnant but don’t realize that they are carrying a child, happen more often than one might think. “The average age at which a girl begins puberty is 11, though it can be anytime between 8 and 14, or younger. Weight affects many hormones,” the doctor went on to say. “Because children are heavier, puberty is happening earlier these days.”

“There’s a higher risk of a low-birthweight baby, pre-eclampsia, premature labour and many infections,” the doctor added. “Around one in every 2,500 births happens to someone who doesn’t know she’s pregnant (or has hidden it).”

It is believed that the 11-year-old girl, who gave birth to a child in June, is currently UK’s youngest mother, according to Newcastle Chronicle. The young girl replaced Tressa Middleton, who gave birth to a child at the age of 12 in the year 2006. Decades earlier, a little girl named Lina Medina became the youngest confirmed mother in medical history, according to Wired. At the age of 5, the Peruvian girl delivered a baby that weighed 5 pounds and 8 ounces.

Having an extreme case of precocious puberty, Lina had her first menstrual cycle when she was only 8 months old and by the age of 4, she had almost fully developed breasts. However, her pelvis was still fairly small, and she needed to have a caesarean section because her birth canal was too small for a baby to pass through.

Before the birth, Lina’s parents thought she might have a tumor after seeing that the child showed abnormal abdominal swelling. When they consulted Dr. Gerardo Lozada, they were told that Lina was 7-months pregnant. But the parents didn’t believe the doctor and went to another specialist to confirm the pregnancy, according to History of Yesterday. Her son, Gerardo Medina, was named after the doctor who was part of the delivery, and he lived to the age of 40 before dying from a bone-marrow disease. What still remains a mystery is the identity of the man who fathered Lina’s child.
