Houston police are looking for an Uber driving accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old who had hired him to take her to a local Family Dollar store.
Police said Leonel Medina, 49, picked up the girl on May 12 and drove to a dead end in the back of a neighborhood instead of the store. Detectives said Medina told the girl the cancel the ride, then climbed into the back seat and locked the doors, ABC13 reported.
Court documents say he raped the girl, then drove her back home and dropped her off.
The girl told detectives she hadn’t said anything about the direction Medina was driving because she thought he was taking an alternate route.
Investigators interviewed Medina and said he admitted assaulting the girl, but he went on the run when detectives took out a warrant for his arrest.
Uber issued a statement saying they had banned the driver and were prepared to help any way they can. The company also told ABC13 that they run background checks on potential drivers and rescreen them annual. They also have a policy that says drivers aren’t supposed to pick up minors who aren’t accompanied by an adult.
Medinais wanted on two counts of sexual assault of a child under 17 and is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall and about 164 pounds, with brown eyes and back hair. Anyone with information about him is asked to call 713-322-8477.
