A routine traffic stop on Interstate 20 in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, resulted in the arrest of a New Orleans woman after a Louisiana State Police trooper allegedly discovered suspected marijuana, ecstasy, and prescription medication during a vehicle search.
Authorities said the arrest occurred on July 10, following a traffic stop involving a white Toyota RAV4 traveling eastbound on the interstate.
Trooper Observed Traffic Violations
According to an arrest affidavit, a Louisiana State Police trooper spotted the white Toyota RAV4 traveling east near milepost 73 at approximately 9 p.m.
The trooper reported that the SUV was following a commercial vehicle at what was considered an unsafe distance of roughly two car lengths while traveling at approximately 60 miles per hour.
Investigators also said the vehicle briefly crossed the dashed centerline into the left lane, prompting the trooper to initiate a traffic stop.
Occupants Gave Conflicting Travel Accounts
During the stop, the driver and passenger reportedly provided different explanations regarding their trip.
The driver told the trooper that they had been returning to New Orleans after spending three days on vacation in Galveston, Texas.
However, Juanita Marie Johnson, 32, of New Orleans, who was riding as a passenger, allegedly stated that they were traveling from Houston to New Orleans after spending only one day in Houston.
According to investigators, the differing travel stories raised additional suspicion during the encounter.
Strong Odor of Marijuana Reportedly Detected
The trooper reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.
Based on that observation, authorities conducted a search of the SUV.
Drugs Allegedly Found During Vehicle Search
During the search, investigators located a small handbag in the area where Johnson had been seated in the left rear passenger seat.
According to court documents, the handbag allegedly contained:
- Approximately seven grams of suspected marijuana
- A blister pack containing five suspected tapentadol dosage units
Tapentadol is a prescription opioid pain medication that is regulated under Louisiana law.
Suspected Ecstasy Recovered Near Vehicle
Authorities also reported finding a separate bag containing suspected ecstasy on the roadside near where the vehicle occupants had been standing during the traffic stop.
According to the arrest affidavit, Johnson allegedly admitted she had thrown the bag onto the ground.
Investigators said she also claimed ownership of both the roadside bag and the items discovered inside the handbag.
The recovered package reportedly contained 82 suspected ecstasy dosage units.
Multiple Drug Charges Filed
Following the investigation, Johnson was arrested and transported to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
She was booked on the following charges:
- Possession of marijuana
- Possession of ecstasy with intent to distribute
- Possession of tapentadol
- Obstruction of justice
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not announced whether additional arrests are expected in connection with the traffic stop.
As with all criminal cases, the allegations contained in the arrest affidavit represent accusations made by law enforcement. Johnson has been charged with the offenses but has not been convicted, and she is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
