A 29-year-old Detroit man was killed Tuesday morning after the tow truck he was driving collided with a semi tractor in Sterling Heights, police said.
The fatal crash happened on July 21 at the intersection of Mound Road and Dorby Drive, near Ryan Road, according to the Sterling Heights Police Department.
Authorities said the crash involved a red semi tractor and a red tow truck. Investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision.
According to the preliminary investigation, the semi tractor was traveling southbound on Mound Road and entered the intersection while the traffic signal was green. At the same time, police said a westbound tow truck traveling on Dorby Drive entered the Mound Road intersection despite having a red light.
The two vehicles then collided in the intersection, causing the deadly crash.
Emergency crews, including Sterling Heights police officers and firefighters, responded to the scene and immediately attempted life-saving measures on the tow truck driver. Despite their efforts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the victim as a 29-year-old man from Detroit but did not release his name pending notification of family members.
The driver of the semi tractor was not injured and declined medical treatment at the scene, authorities said.
Investigators said they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Police have not announced whether any citations or charges will be issued as the investigation continues.
The crash caused traffic disruptions in the area as emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators collected evidence.
