A former college football player is facing criminal charges after police say he threatened passengers aboard a Miami-Dade Transit bus with a knife during a frightening confrontation in Miami Beach, Florida.
According to authorities, Demetrius Byrd, 40, was arrested on Monday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly brandishing a blade and threatening commuters. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he is being held on a $5,000 bond.
Police Respond to Reports of Armed Man on Bus
According to an arrest report, officers responded Monday morning to an intersection in Miami Beach after receiving reports of a man threatening passengers with a knife aboard a Miami-Dade Transit bus.
When officers arrived, they boarded the bus and interviewed the driver, who described a tense encounter involving Byrd and another passenger.
The driver told investigators that Byrd became involved in an argument after boarding the bus. During the confrontation, she allegedly saw him wave a knife toward passengers while shouting, “Who wants to die today?”
Passenger Says He Tried to Defuse the Situation
Police also interviewed a passenger who witnessed the incident.
The witness said Byrd began screaming and yelling shortly after getting on the bus. Hoping to calm him down, the passenger attempted to speak with him and de-escalate the situation.
According to the arrest report, the exchange became more heated, and the passenger eventually told Byrd to “shut up.”
The witness told police that Byrd then allegedly pulled out a silver multi-tool, opened the blade, and walked toward him while pointing it in his direction.
The passenger said Byrd asked him “if he wanted to die,” leaving him fearful for his safety.
Officers Recover Multi-Tool During Arrest
After the incident, officers located Byrd near the bus.
Police searched him and reported finding a silver multi-tool inside his shorts, which investigators believe matched the weapon allegedly displayed during the confrontation.
Following interviews with witnesses and the recovery of the tool, Byrd was taken into custody without further incident.
Charged With Aggravated Assault
Byrd was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
His bond was set at $5,000, and court records indicated that a future court date had not yet been scheduled.
Former College Football Standout
According to local television station WPLG, Byrd was once a standout football player for the Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers.
He was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 2009 NFL Draft, but he never appeared in a regular-season game for the team.
Investigation Continues
Authorities continue to investigate the incident. No injuries were reported, but prosecutors allege Byrd’s actions placed passengers in fear of imminent harm, resulting in the aggravated assault charge. The case will proceed through the Miami-Dade County court system as additional hearings are scheduled.
