A Connecticut woman has been arrested after police say she was driving under the influence when her Jeep collided with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, killing an off-duty police officer and his girlfriend in a tragic crash in Danbury.
Woman Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
The Danbury Police Department announced that Melissa Ramirez, 27, has been charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle following the deaths of Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside, 38, and Brittany Anne Islami, 34.
Ramirez also faces charges of:
- Operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Traveling at an unreasonable speed.
- Failure to drive in the proper lane.
Authorities said she is being held on a $500,000 bond.
Fatal Crash Happened During Early Morning Hours
According to investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m. on July 13 along Sugar Hollow Road in Danbury, Connecticut.
Police said Officer Whiteside and Islami were riding on Whiteside’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle when Ramirez, who was driving a Jeep, allegedly struck the motorcycle.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but both Whiteside and Islami were pronounced dead from their injuries.
Driver Suffered Serious Injuries
Authorities reported that Ramirez’s Jeep sustained severe front-end damage in the collision.
Police said firefighters had to remove Ramirez from the heavily damaged vehicle before she was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
Following the investigation, officers arrested Ramirez and filed multiple criminal charges related to the fatal crash.
Officer Remembered for His Commitment to Public Service
Officer Cooper Whiteside served with the Bridgeport Police Department and was remembered by family, friends, and colleagues as someone who had dreamed of becoming a police officer from an early age.
According to his memorial, Whiteside was also an accomplished violinist and pianist, a certified rescue diver, an outdoor enthusiast, a skilled handyman, and someone known for his humor and kindness.
His obituary noted that during just two years with the police department, he earned a reputation for serving the community with integrity, humility, compassion, and dedication.
Brittany Islami Leaves Behind Three Children
Brittany Anne Islami worked as a caretaker and personal assistant, according to her obituary.
She is survived by three children, ages 12, 10, and 7.
Loved ones described Islami as someone who brought joy wherever she went, saying she was the life of every gathering and had a unique personality that made a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
Case Continues Through the Courts
Ramirez remains in custody as prosecutors continue pursuing the criminal case.
She faces two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, along with charges related to alleged impaired driving, excessive speed, and failing to maintain the proper lane.
Authorities continue investigating the fatal collision that claimed the lives of Officer Cooper Whiteside and Brittany Anne Islami, while family members and colleagues continue mourning the loss of two lives cut short.
