Florida Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Murdering 93-Year-Old Girlfriend’s Mother After Birthday Celebration

A Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of brutally murdering his girlfriend’s 93-year-old mother inside her senior living apartment just one day after she celebrated her birthday with family.

Defendant Convicted of First-Degree Murder

Javier Rosado Martinez, 58, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 93-year-old Dolores Padilla-Marrero. The killing took place on March 13, 2022, at a senior living facility located on Alafaya Trail in Orlando, Florida.

During sentencing on Tuesday, the court ordered Martinez to spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Although prosecutors pursued the death penalty, the jury instead recommended a sentence of life imprisonment.

The victim had just celebrated her birthday

According to investigators, Dolores Padilla-Marrero had recently celebrated her birthday with family members before returning to her apartment on the evening of March 13, 2022.

Her daughter dropped her off at the assisted living residence at approximately 8 p.m. Later that evening, the daughter attempted to contact her mother through text messages to discuss buying dresses, but received no response, which was unusual.

Concerned by the silence, the daughter and her husband returned to the apartment the following morning.

Family Made the Tragic Discovery

When the couple entered the apartment on March 14, they discovered Padilla-Marrero dead in her bedroom.

According to investigators, the elderly woman was found lying face up on her bed. She was partially unclothed, with a pillow placed over her face and a blanket covering part of her body.

Responding deputies immediately noticed suspicious circumstances that suggested the death was not from natural causes, despite occurring inside a senior living facility.

Autopsy Revealed Violent Attack

The Orange County Medical Examiner determined that Padilla-Marrero died from a combination of strangulation and blunt force trauma.

The autopsy revealed that she suffered multiple cracked ribs caused by severe blows to her torso before being strangled to death.

Officials officially ruled her death a homicide.

Investigators Quickly Focused on Martinez

Authorities determined that Martinez had attempted to enter the secured senior apartment building by himself on the night of the murder.

Police said he initially could not gain access but was eventually let inside by another resident.

Investigators believe he then entered Padilla-Marrero’s apartment and attacked her.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina described the crime as especially disturbing because the victim knew and trusted Martinez.

According to investigators, Padilla-Marrero had welcomed him into her life through his relationship with one of her daughters.

Necklace Became a Key Piece of Evidence

During the crime scene investigation, detectives recovered part of a necklace near the victim’s body.

The item was a distinctive horn-shaped pendant without its chain.

Investigators later learned from Martinez’s girlfriend—who is one of Padilla-Marrero’s daughters—that he regularly wore the unique necklace.

Detectives considered the pendant one of the earliest and most significant pieces of physical evidence connecting Martinez to the murder.

Additional Evidence Strengthened the Case

Authorities said several other forms of evidence supported the prosecution’s case, including:

  • DNA evidence
  • Surveillance video
  • Keys belonging to the victim’s apartment were recovered from Martinez
  • Physical characteristics that investigators said matched the suspect seen during the investigation

Officials noted that Martinez’s distinctive body size also helped identify him during the investigation.

Arrest Followed Investigation

Martinez was arrested at his home in Casselberry on a murder warrant.

During questioning, he reportedly claimed that he had “blacked out” on the night of the killing.

Despite his statement, investigators said the evidence overwhelmingly linked him to the crime.

Prosecutors Praise Victim’s Family

Orange County State Attorney Monique Worrell said the sentence delivers justice for Padilla-Marrero and protects the public.

She described the victim as a woman who had trusted Martinez and welcomed him into her life, only to be met with extreme violence.

Worrell also praised the victim’s family for showing extraordinary strength throughout the lengthy legal process.

Sheriff Calls Crime Horrific

Orange County Sheriff John Mina called the murder a tragic and heinous crime.

Investigators noted that while deaths at senior living facilities are often the result of natural causes, deputies immediately recognized suspicious evidence at the scene that prompted a homicide investigation.

Officials said the careful processing of the apartment ultimately led to critical evidence that helped secure Martinez’s conviction.

Case Outcome

Following his conviction for first-degree murder, Javier Rosado Martinez has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The case concluded more than four years after the killing of Dolores Padilla-Marrero, whose family had gathered to celebrate her birthday only one day before her life was violently taken.
