An Idaho man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he broke into a woman’s home in the early morning hours, attempted to sexually assault her, and allegedly strangled her before fleeing the scene.
Tyler Humphries, 39, has been charged with attempted rape, attempted strangulation, domestic violence battery, and burglary. The allegations stem from an incident that reportedly occurred around 3 a.m. on July 16, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by East Idaho News.
Investigators say the woman told police she woke up while sleeping to find Humphries standing over her with his pants down. According to the affidavit, Humphries allegedly told her he was “going to rape her until she told him the truth.”
Police allege that Humphries then climbed on top of the woman and attempted to sexually assault her. When the victim screamed for help, investigators say he covered her mouth and began choking her in an effort to silence her.
The woman was eventually able to escape and ran into a nearby room where a child was sleeping. According to the affidavit, the child wrapped the victim in a blanket and confronted Humphries.
Authorities allege Humphries then shoved or slammed the child against a wall before fleeing the residence.
When officers arrived, they observed bruising on the woman’s thigh. She also complained that her throat felt like it was burning after the alleged assault.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where medical staff reportedly determined that swelling in her throat had placed her airway at risk of closing.
Police arrested Humphries later that same morning after he reportedly returned to the home.
According to investigators, officers found marijuana and a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine in his possession during the arrest.
During questioning, Humphries initially told detectives he had only wanted to “cuddle” with the woman. However, according to the arrest affidavit, he later admitted to assaulting her.
Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the relationship between Humphries and the alleged victim.
Humphries was booked into the Bonneville County Jail, where he remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 31.
The charges against Humphries are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
