An Illinois woman has been charged after authorities alleged she left her 4-year-old son home alone for nearly 20 hours while working, during which time a house fire broke out and claimed the child’s life.
Aliannay P. Rodriguez, 21, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment causing death, and child abandonment in connection with the death of her son, Christopher Alfaro-Rodriguez, according to the Mundelein Police Department.
The fatal fire occurred shortly after 12:21 a.m. on March 23 at a residence in the 200 block of Dalton Avenue in Mundelein, Illinois.
When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from three sides of the single-story home. Rodriguez and another individual informed emergency crews that the 4-year-old child was still trapped inside the burning house.
Firefighters immediately searched for Christopher but were unable to locate him during their initial rescue attempt. Authorities said crews attempted a second search, but intense flames and the threat of a collapsing hallway prevented them from safely continuing.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the child deceased in the home’s basement.
Officials later determined that Christopher died from smoke inhalation, while investigators concluded that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.
According to police, Rodriguez initially told investigators she had only left the home briefly to get food. However, detectives said their investigation uncovered evidence that contradicted that explanation.
Police reviewed surveillance footage, cellphone location data, and witness statements, which allegedly showed Rodriguez had been away from the residence for approximately 20 hours before the fire began.
Investigators determined that Rodriguez worked for a cleaning service and had spent the day cleaning homes alongside her boyfriend.
Another resident of the home told investigators he had left the house the previous morning after seeing Christopher inside but was unaware the child had been left home alone.
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart described the case as tragic and urged the public to report situations where young children may be left unattended.
He praised the Mundelein Police Department’s investigation and stated that the evidence supported the involuntary manslaughter charge, which carries a potential sentence of up to 14 years in prison if Rodriguez is convicted.
Rodriguez was arrested and booked into the Lake County Jail.
During her initial court appearance, a judge denied prosecutors’ request to keep her detained pending trial, allowing her release under court-ordered conditions.
She is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 27 as the criminal case moves forward.
