An Illinois woman has been charged with murder after investigators said evidence at the scene contradicted her claim that her boyfriend fatally shot himself during an argument.
Lindsy Kendrick, 31, is being held in the Kendall County Jail on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon following the death of her boyfriend, Daevin Wlodek, 28.
The fatal shooting occurred during the early morning hours of July 18 at Wlodek’s apartment in Yorkville, Illinois.
Officers Found Victim With Gunshot Wound
According to court documents cited by local outlet WGN, police responded to Wlodek’s apartment after receiving a report of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found Wlodek lying on the floor with a gunshot wound. A firearm was reportedly located near his feet.
Emergency responders transported Wlodek to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Woman Claimed Boyfriend Shot Himself
Police said Kendrick was at the apartment when officers arrived.
She allegedly told investigators that Wlodek had attacked her before turning the gun on himself.
According to court documents, Kendrick acknowledged that both of them had been emotional during the confrontation, reportedly telling officers:
“I’m sure we both were in a fit of rage.”
Investigators later concluded that physical evidence did not support her version of events.
Officers Overheard Phone Call
Authorities said Kendrick was talking on her cellphone when officers reached the scene.
According to police, officers overheard her telling the person on the other end of the call:
“He has a gun in there.”
She also reportedly stated:
“He shot it.”
Those remarks were included in the investigation as detectives examined what had occurred inside the apartment.
Autopsy Revealed Gunshot Entered Through Victim’s Back
An autopsy determined that Wlodek died from a gunshot wound to the back, with the bullet exiting through his chest.
Investigators also reported finding long blonde hair clenched in Wlodek’s right hand.
The medical examination further documented scratches and bruises on his neck, hands, and legs, suggesting there had been a physical struggle before the shooting.
Police also noted that Kendrick did not have visible injuries on her body when officers examined her.
Gunshot Residue Test Declined
According to court records, detectives asked Kendrick to submit to a gunshot residue test, but she declined.
Investigators said they were still able to collect the evidence they needed under what court documents described as an “exigent circumstance” procedure.
Authorities have not publicly released additional details about that evidence.
Defendant Held Without Bond
Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Kendrick with multiple felony offenses, including first-degree murder.
She is currently being held without bond in the Kendall County Jail.
Her next scheduled court appearance is July 28.
The case remains under investigation. The allegations against Kendrick are contained in criminal charging documents, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
