A Minnesota man has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison after being convicted of killing his 74-year-old mother while she was asleep in a recliner inside her Duluth home.
According to court records, Nathan Davin was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of MaeDean Davin and was sentenced to 21 years and nine months (21¾ years) in prison. The court also credited him with approximately one year already served in custody.
Prosecutors Say Victim Was Sleeping During Attack
The fatal attack took place on Aug. 16 at a residence on the 1500 block of North 9th Avenue East in Duluth, Minnesota.
During sentencing proceedings, Assistant St. Louis County Attorney Kirstyn Oye said MaeDean Davin appeared to be asleep in her recliner when the attack occurred.
According to prosecutors, Nathan Davin shot his mother in the face before striking her in the head with a blunt object, causing severe injuries.
Investigators Found Disturbing Scene Inside Home
Authorities reported finding spray-painted messages and symbols throughout the home during their investigation.
According to investigators, the markings included phrases such as “go to hell” along with symbols described as satanic in nature.
Police believe the messages were written after the killing.
Defendant Contacted Neighbors After Incident
After the attack, investigators said Nathan Davin left the house wearing only boxer shorts and covered in blood.
He knocked on a neighbor’s door and reportedly said that someone had died.
Authorities also said he contacted another neighbor and claimed, “My mom’s dead. She blew her head off.”
Emergency responders were then called to the residence.
Police Found Victim in Recliner
When officers with the Duluth Police Department arrived, they found Nathan Davin standing on the front porch.
According to police, he initially claimed that he had awakened and discovered his mother dead inside the home.
Officers entered the residence and found MaeDean Davin in a recliner with a fatal gunshot wound to her face. Investigators also observed a significant amount of blood on her clothing and the chair.
Firearm Recovered During Search
While processing the crime scene, investigators recovered a blood-covered Glock 9 mm handgun from a nightstand inside the home.
Police also found ammunition matching shell casings recovered elsewhere in the residence.
Nathan Davin was arrested at the scene.
According to investigators, while sitting in a patrol vehicle, he allegedly remarked, “There went my life.”
Defendant Later Confessed
Police reported that Davin appeared to be intoxicated during the investigation.
While alone in an interview room, authorities said he admitted responsibility for the killing.
According to investigators, he stated, “God d— it. I killed my mother.”
Court Imposes Prison Sentence
Following his conviction for second-degree murder, the court sentenced Nathan Davin to 21¾ years in prison, with credit for approximately one year already served while awaiting trial.
The case has concluded with sentencing, and Davin will remain in the custody of the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
