New Mexico Woman Fatally Stabbed After Reporting Neighbor’s Alleged Harassment Over Water Dispute, Police Say

A dispute between neighbors at an Albuquerque, New Mexico, apartment complex ended in tragedy after a 22-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her downstairs neighbor moments after she reported him to the leasing office, according to police.

Authorities arrested 39-year-old Michael Cain, who now faces an open count of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of Esmeralda Linette Romero.

Cain is being held without bail at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center.

Complaint Over Water Dripping From Balcony

According to investigators, the incident occurred Monday at the Albuquerque Encore Apartments.

Police said Cain became upset because water was allegedly dripping from Romero’s upstairs patio onto his own patio. Court documents indicate he believed Romero was intentionally pouring water onto his outdoor area.

Cain reportedly went to the apartment complex’s leasing office to complain about the issue. A leasing office employee told him the matter would be addressed, and he then left the office.

Romero Reported Alleged Harassment

After Cain departed, Romero visited the leasing office to report her own concerns about her neighbor.

According to investigators, she told the employee that Cain had come to her apartment, banged on her door, and harassed her over the water issue.

Romero reportedly explained that any water dripping onto Cain’s patio occasionally came from her dog’s water bowl and denied deliberately pouring water onto his property.

The leasing office employee told Romero that management was working on a solution and advised her to contact apartment security or call 911 if Cain threatened her again.

Attack Occurred Outside Leasing Office

Police say the situation escalated moments later as Romero left the leasing office.

According to investigators, Cain allegedly ran toward Romero from the parking lot armed with a knife and attacked her.

Authorities allege he stabbed Romero multiple times, inflicting fatal injuries.

The leasing office employee told police that Cain fled immediately after the attack before discarding the knife.

Suspect Allegedly Called 911

Investigators said Cain then called 911 himself and reportedly stated that he had stabbed someone.

Police officers quickly responded to the apartment complex, located Cain, and took him into custody.

Authorities also noticed that Cain appeared to have suffered an injury to one of his hands during the incident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment before being booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center.

Multiple Charges Filed

Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Cain with:

  • Open count of murder.
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
  • Tampering with evidence.

He remains jailed without bond while the case proceeds through the court system.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities continue to investigate the fatal stabbing, which they say began with an argument over water dripping from an upstairs apartment balcony and escalated into deadly violence shortly after both neighbors separately visited the leasing office to report the dispute. Police have not released additional details as the criminal case moves forward.
