Washington Man Accused of Brutal Propane Tank Attack That Left Woman With Severe Head Injuries

A Washington state man has been arrested after police say he violently attacked a woman living at a homeless encampment by striking her multiple times with a full-size propane tank, leaving her with life-threatening head injuries and permanent disfigurement.

Joe Vaughn Johnson, 38, is facing multiple felony charges, including assault, arson, obstruction, and resisting arrest, following the July 10 incident at a homeless camp known locally as “the Jungle” in Olympia.

Woman Allegedly Attacked While Trying to Remove Man From Shelter

According to court documents cited by authorities, the victim was inside her housing structure at the “Jungle” encampment when Johnson repeatedly attempted to enter.

Investigators say the woman tried to force Johnson to leave the shelter, but the confrontation quickly turned violent. Johnson allegedly grabbed a full-size propane tank and repeatedly swung it at the woman.

Authorities said the victim attempted to defend herself by using pepper spray, but Johnson allegedly struck her several times in the head with the heavy propane tank.

Victim Suffers Brain Bleed and Severe Forehead Injury

The attack left the woman with devastating injuries. Prosecutors said she suffered a severe laceration to her forehead that reportedly left a hole in her head and caused permanent disfigurement.

She was transported to a local hospital, where doctors treated her for a brain bleed, a hematoma, and additional head injuries.

Witnesses who were at the encampment reportedly saw the assault and told investigators that Johnson fled the area immediately after the attack.

Police Locate Suspect at Public Housing Facility

Following the assault, officers tracked Johnson to a public housing complex in Olympia.

According to investigators, Johnson barricaded himself inside the building and refused to surrender when officers arrived.

The Thurston County SWAT team was called to assist with the standoff.

Authorities allege that while barricaded inside, Johnson set fires within the building. Officers eventually deployed pepper-ball rounds into the apartment before sending in a police dog and tactical officers, who successfully took him into custody.

Prosecutors Describe Johnson as a Danger

Johnson appeared in court for a preliminary hearing, where prosecutors argued that he poses a serious threat to public safety.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Wayne Graham described the alleged assault as exceptionally violent, telling the court that Johnson struck the victim with a full-size propane tank and caused injuries so severe that responding officers were surprised she was still able to walk afterward.

Prior Criminal Record and Additional Charges

Court records indicate Johnson was on parole at the time of the alleged attack due to a previous stabbing conviction.

In addition to the assault charge stemming from the attack, Johnson now faces charges of arson, obstruction, and resisting arrest related to the police standoff.

A judge ordered Johnson to remain in custody on a $1 million bond while the case proceeds.

The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors continue preparing the case against him.
