A Wisconsin woman is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say she repeatedly poisoned her ex-husband by secretly putting Visine eye drops into his drinks and even attempting to contaminate his CPAP machine. Police allege the woman later admitted she wanted to make him sick so he would rely on her for care.
Jessica Meis, 37, is being held in the Portage County Jail on a $100,000 bond. She has been charged with aggravated battery with a domestic violence modifier and two counts of placing foreign objects in edibles, according to a criminal complaint.
Ex-Husband Reported Years of Unexplained Illness
The investigation began after Meis’ ex-husband contacted the Stevens Point Police Department on Monday, telling officers he believed someone had been poisoning him.
According to police, the man said he had been suffering from unexplained health problems since 2021. His symptoms reportedly included severe fatigue, dizziness, frequent headaches, and sleeping for unusually long periods.
Although the couple finalized their divorce in June 2025, they continued living together in their Stevens Point home for some time before Meis moved into her own residence in nearby Plover.
Multiple Hospital Visits Raised Concerns
The ex-husband told investigators he was hospitalized four times between July and September 2025 because of unexplained medical problems while Meis was still living with him.
Even after moving out, Meis regularly visited the home because the former couple shared custody of their three children.
According to the complaint, Meis stayed at the house again in January 2026 after the heating system at her own home stopped working. During that month, the victim reportedly experienced three additional health episodes.
His condition worsened again beginning in May 2026, with incidents involving dangerously low blood pressure becoming increasingly frequent through July 19.
Suspicious Energy Drink Led to Investigation
One incident especially increased the man’s suspicions.
He told police he became ill after drinking from an open can of Monster energy drink that had been left in the refrigerator in July 2025. Believing the beverage may have been tampered with, he suspected Meis had placed something inside it.
His mother preserved the can, which investigators later collected as evidence after the victim officially reported his concerns.
Hidden Camera Allegedly Captured Tampering
After becoming convinced someone was poisoning him, the man installed a hidden surveillance camera in his kitchen on July 14.
Police reviewed footage recorded on July 18 and said it allegedly showed Meis removing a small container from her pocket before pouring its contents into a black water bottle.
Investigators said she intentionally kept the bottle and container below the kitchen counter so two of the couple’s children could not see what she was doing.
According to police, she then returned the water bottle to its original location and placed the container back into her pocket.
Additional Video Showed Similar Incident
Detectives also reviewed surveillance footage from July 16.
According to the complaint, Meis was seen removing a bottle of eye drops from her purse before taking a bottle of Propel water from the refrigerator.
Police said she turned away from the camera and appeared to block its view while handling the bottle, leading investigators to believe she poured the eye drops into the drink.
That Propel bottle was later consumed by another person instead of her ex-husband. Investigators recovered the bottle as evidence.
Interview Led to Alleged Confession
Police interviewed Meis at her home after advising her of her rights.
According to investigators, she acknowledged knowing her former husband had experienced repeated episodes of low blood pressure. She also reportedly told officers she enjoys watching true crime and murder mystery television shows.
When confronted with the surveillance footage, Meis initially claimed she had been putting saline solution or salt into the drinks as a way to help regulate his blood pressure.
However, police said she later admitted the substance was actually Visine eye drops.
Police Say She Admitted Poisoning Him “Many Times”
Investigators said Meis first claimed she had only added the eye drops a couple of times.
As questioning continued, she allegedly admitted she had done it “many times.”
According to the complaint, she confessed to putting Visine into several of her ex-husband’s beverages, including:
- Monster energy drinks
- Propel flavored water
- Bubbler drinks
- Old fashioned cocktail mix
Police also allege Meis admitted attempting to place Visine inside her ex-husband’s CPAP machine but said she did not think that attempt was successful.
Alleged Motive Was to Make Him Depend on Her
According to investigators, Meis admitted she wanted her former husband to become ill so he would rely on her.
Police say she told them she hoped making him sick would cause him to allow her to care for him and make him “need her.”
When asked whether she worried about the couple’s children accidentally drinking the contaminated beverages, Meis allegedly responded that “they don’t drink these things.”
Investigators also stated she showed no remorse during the interview.
Charges and Upcoming Court Appearance
Following the interview, Meis was arrested and booked into the Portage County Jail.
She remains in custody on a $100,000 bond and faces charges of aggravated battery with a domestic violence modifier and two counts of placing foreign objects in edibles.
Court records show she is scheduled to return to court on July 27, while the investigation continues.
