A 19-year-old Baton Rouge woman has died following a serious early morning crash involving a vehicle that was stopped in a travel lane, according to Louisiana State Police.
The crash happened before 3 a.m. Thursday on Nicholson Drive near Innovation Park Drive in East Baton Rouge Parish, investigators said.
Authorities identified the victim as Madison Marshall of Baton Rouge, who later died from injuries she suffered in the collision.
Kia Crashes Into Stopped Cadillac Escalade
According to investigators, Marshall was driving a Kia K4 when the vehicle struck the rear of a Cadillac Escalade that was stopped in the northbound lane of Nicholson Drive.
Police said the Cadillac had stopped in the roadway while its occupants were attempting to assist people in a disabled Ram pickup truck that was located on the right shoulder.
Officials said the stopped vehicle created a dangerous situation for other drivers traveling through the area.
Victim Taken to Hospital With Critical Injuries
State police said Marshall was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
She suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.
The driver of the Cadillac Escalade was also not wearing a seat belt, according to investigators. That driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Investigation Continues
Louisiana State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities have not released additional details about the events leading up to the collision.
Police Warn Drivers About Stopping on Roadways
Following the crash, state police reminded motorists that stopping a vehicle in an active travel lane can create a serious hazard for drivers, passengers, and anyone attempting to assist others.
Officials urged drivers to move vehicles to a safe and legal location whenever possible when dealing with roadside emergencies.
