A Baton Rouge man has been arrested after police say he assaulted another man, threatened him with an AK-47, and fired multiple shots during a confrontation at an apartment complex on Denham Street.
According to an arrest warrant, the incident happened on July 13 when the alleged victim was preparing to take his laundry to be washed. While loading his belongings into his vehicle, 57-year-old Billy Williams reportedly arrived in another vehicle and approached him while carrying an AK-47.
Police said Williams aggressively confronted the man, asking him whether he “wanted to do something” and whether he had a problem with him.
The victim reportedly told Williams that he did not know him and did not want any trouble. However, investigators said Williams then attacked him, punching him several times.
The assault left the victim on the ground with swelling on the right side of his face. Emergency medical personnel later treated him for his injuries, according to authorities.
Police said the situation escalated when the victim attempted to get back up. Williams allegedly cocked the firearm, pointed it at him, and threatened him multiple times.
As the victim tried to escape by running away, Williams allegedly fired several shots in his direction, according to Baton Rouge Police Department officials.
The victim’s girlfriend was inside the vehicle during the alleged attack. While fleeing the scene, the man dropped his cellphone.
Police said the victim’s girlfriend later contacted Williams because they knew each other through mutual friends and asked whether he had the phone. Investigators said Williams confirmed he had the cellphone and told her they could come retrieve it.
Authorities arrested Williams on Tuesday following an investigation into the incident.
He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, aggravated assault with a firearm, theft, and simple battery.
The case remains under investigation as authorities continue gathering evidence related to the alleged confrontation and shooting.
