A shooting during a large gathering in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood left six people injured early Sunday morning, including two men who suffered critical injuries, police said.
The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the 900 block of North Central Park Avenue, where Chicago police responded after receiving reports of multiple gunshots and several people being wounded.
According to police dispatch recordings, callers reported hearing dozens of shots fired and described multiple victims at the scene.
“Shots fired, 900-block of North Central… caller says 30 shots fired,” a dispatcher said. Other reports indicated that a man and a woman had been shot during what was described as a possible drive-by shooting.
As officers arrived in the area, additional calls came in reporting more victims.
One caller reported seeing a person lying on the ground with a gunshot wound near 918 North Central Park Avenue. Another victim later arrived at a hospital on their own, telling medical staff they had been shot near Central Park Avenue and Augusta Boulevard.
Large Gathering Was Underway Before Shooting
Neighbors said a large party with more than 100 people had been taking place on the block before the gunfire erupted.
Residents described the gathering as calm and peaceful before the shooting.
“They were sitting on their cars, just playing music. It was summertime in Chicago, so it didn’t seem like it was going to be a problem,” one neighbor said. However, the resident added that violence is always a concern in the area.
Police said six people were struck by gunfire during the incident.
Victims Identified
Authorities provided details on the injuries suffered by the victims:
- A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times and taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
- A 33-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his finger and was transported to Humboldt Park Health. He was reported to be in good condition.
- A 39-year-old man was shot in the thigh and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
- A 46-year-old woman suffered gunshot wounds to her back and foot and was transported to Stroger Hospital. She was reported to be in good condition.
- A 34-year-old woman was shot in the hip and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.
- A 36-year-old man was shot multiple times and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Community Support Offered After Violence
Following the shooting, Habilitative Systems Inc. (HSI) began coordinating mental health support for victims, witnesses and community members affected by the violence.
Chaundra VanDyk, HSI’s program director of special initiatives, said it is important to provide support quickly after traumatic events.
“It’s important that it happens fast because we know that people are impacted immediately, and we don’t want folks to live in a crisis state,” VanDyk said.
She explained that violent incidents can have long-term emotional effects on residents and may bring back trauma from previous experiences.
“This may re-traumatize some people and bring about some things that they experienced in the past or create new experiences in the present that may not be positive,” VanDyk said. She added that support services aim to help people process what happened and begin healing.
Investigation Ongoing
Chicago police continue to investigate the shooting and have not released information about a possible suspect or motive.
Authorities said there is currently no additional information available about who may have been responsible for the gunfire.
Detectives are continuing to collect evidence and speak with witnesses as the investigation remains active.
