A large-scale traffic enforcement initiative targeting dangerous driving and violent crime resulted in 73 arrests, more than 2,200 traffic citations, and the seizure of 18 firearms during a two-day operation across the Charlotte area, officials announced.
The enforcement effort, known as Queen City Overwatch, was conducted on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, with the goal of improving safety on major interstate highways and reducing criminal activity.
Multiple Law Enforcement Agencies Participated
The operation was a coordinated effort involving several agencies, including:
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD)
- North Carolina State Highway Patrol
- Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office
Officials said the agencies worked together by sharing real-time intelligence and coordinating deployments to identify dangerous drivers, violent offenders, and individuals wanted for outstanding crimes.
The operation primarily focused on Charlotte-area interstates, where officers targeted reckless driving, impaired driving, and criminal activity that threatened public safety.
Authorities Targeted Violent Offenders and Dangerous Drivers
According to law enforcement officials, officers used intelligence gathered during the operation to locate individuals suspected of committing violent crimes and other high-impact offenses.
Police said the operation also focused on drivers whose reckless behavior posed significant risks to motorists and the community.
Officials noted that removing dangerous drivers from the roads helps reduce crashes and improves safety for residents and travelers.
Police Chief Highlights Public Safety Mission
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Estella D. Patterson said the operation was designed to make the city’s roads and neighborhoods safer.
“This operation was about protecting you,” Patterson said.
She added that the coordinated enforcement effort aimed to ensure that:

- Businesses can operate without disruption.
- Neighborhoods remain safe and secure.
Officials described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety while addressing violent crime throughout the Charlotte area.
Results of the Two-Day Operation
Authorities released the following enforcement statistics from the July 10-11 operation:
- 1,281 traffic stops
- 2,209 traffic citations issued
- 73 arrests
- 18 firearms seized
- 26 outstanding warrants served
- 4 stolen vehicles recovered
- 39 arrests for driving while impaired (DWI)
Officials said these results demonstrate the impact of coordinated law enforcement efforts across multiple agencies.
Firearms and Stolen Vehicles Recovered
During the operation, officers confiscated 18 firearms from individuals encountered during enforcement activities.
Authorities also recovered four stolen vehicles, preventing them from remaining in circulation.
In addition, officers served 26 outstanding warrants, taking wanted individuals into custody.
Focus on Impaired and Reckless Driving
Law enforcement officials said impaired driving remained a significant focus during the operation.
A total of 39 people were arrested for driving while impaired, highlighting ongoing concerns about intoxicated drivers on Charlotte-area roadways.
Police also issued thousands of traffic citations for various violations discovered during more than 1,200 traffic stops.

Queen City Overwatch is part of a broader initiative by local and state law enforcement agencies to improve highway safety throughout the Charlotte region.
