Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman is facing criticism on social media after posting a video from the scene of a major water main break in West Hollywood, where she blamed decades of neglected infrastructure and promised to prioritize long-term investments if elected mayor.
The post came after a massive water pipe rupture flooded parts of the Sunset Strip, damaging businesses, homes and vehicles, while creating a large sinkhole that disrupted traffic and daily life in the area.
Raman Visits Scene of Water Main Break
In a video shared on the social media platform X, Raman appeared at the scene alongside West Hollywood Councilmember Chelsea Byers, surveying the damage caused by the water main failure.
Standing near the flooded roadway, Raman described the extent of the destruction caused by the burst pipe.
“We’re out here in West Hollywood, where a 110-year-old DWP water pipe just burst, flooding Sunset Boulevard, flooding businesses and homes and hundreds of cars, creating a massive sinkhole,” she said in the video.
Footage accompanying the post showed muddy floodwaters covering sections of Sunset Boulevard, with Metro buses, passenger vehicles and a white van partially submerged. The flooding also contributed to the formation of a large sinkhole that forced road closures and emergency response efforts.
Businesses and Residents Impacted
Raman said she and Byers spent time speaking with business owners and local residents affected by the incident.
According to Raman, many businesses now face significant financial challenges as they recover from the flooding.
She said the damage will likely result in:
- Thousands of dollars in insurance claims.
- Flood damage to businesses and homes.
- Financial uncertainty for restaurant employees.
- Payroll concerns for local business owners.
Raman noted that many workers employed by nearby restaurants fear losing income while businesses remain closed for cleanup and repairs.

“We cannot, as a city, keep governing from crisis to crisis. We have to plan for the inevitable,” Raman stated.
In the written post accompanying the video, she added that infrastructure failures such as the recent water main break are the result of “decades of neglect.”
Raman also pledged that, if elected mayor, she would make infrastructure investment a priority to help prevent similar emergencies in the future.
