A man who was listed among the Atlanta Police Department’s Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives has been arrested in connection with a deadly 2021 shooting, authorities announced.
Police said Darius Williams was taken into custody Tuesday during a coordinated operation involving Atlanta homicide investigators, federal agencies and the Athens-Clark County SWAT team.
Williams had been wanted for years in connection with a fatal shooting in southwest Atlanta and was eventually captured in Clark County, according to authorities.
Suspect Allegedly Used Multiple Identities to Avoid Arrest
Investigators said Williams had taken steps to avoid being captured for an extended period.
According to police, detectives discovered driver’s licenses from multiple states under different names inside Williams’ residence.
Authorities believe Williams used those different identities as part of an effort to evade law enforcement while he remained wanted in the homicide case.
Deadly 2021 Shooting Investigation
Williams was wanted in connection with a shooting that happened on October 16, 2021.
According to Atlanta police, officers responded to the 2300 block of Niskey Lake Road SW after receiving reports of a person being shot.
When officers arrived, they found a man inside a vehicle suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel with Grady EMS responded, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity.
Arrest Follows Multi-Agency Investigation
The Atlanta Police Department said homicide investigators worked alongside federal law enforcement agencies and Athens-Clark County authorities to locate and apprehend Williams.
Officials said the arrest was the result of continued investigative efforts to track down one of the city’s most wanted fugitives.
Williams Faces Murder Charge
Following his arrest, Williams was booked into the Fulton County Jail.
He is currently facing charges including:
- Murder
- Fugitive from justice
Authorities have not released additional details about the investigation, including a possible motive or whether more charges could be filed.
The case remains active as investigators continue reviewing evidence related to the 2021 homicide.
