Wildfire Smoke Forces Event Cancellations and Closures Across Metro Detroit as Air Quality Reaches Dangerous Levels

Thick wildfire smoke drifting into southeast Michigan has triggered widespread closures and event cancellations across the Detroit metropolitan area, as officials warn residents about hazardous air quality conditions.

Smoke from wildfires burning in Northern Ontario moved into metro Detroit after a cold front pushed the smoke south, creating unhealthy conditions throughout the region. On Thursday morning, Detroit recorded the worst air quality in the world, according to air quality monitoring data, with officials warning that the smoky conditions could continue for the next several days.

As a result, numerous public attractions, outdoor events, parks, and recreational facilities have either closed temporarily or canceled scheduled activities to protect public health.

John Mellencamp Concert at Pine Knob Canceled

One of the biggest cancellations involves John Mellencamp’s concert at Pine Knob Music Theatre, which was scheduled for Thursday, July 16.

Organizers announced that the performance has been canceled because of poor air quality and recommendations from public health officials. The concert will not be rescheduled.

Customers who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will automatically receive refunds without needing to take any action. Those who bought tickets through third-party resale platforms such as StubHub, SeatGeek, or Vivid Seats have been instructed to contact their respective sellers for refund information.

Officials also announced that the Cullen Family Carousel, along with all cafés and food service locations within the riverfront parks, will remain closed until conditions improve.

Belle Isle Aquarium Closed

The City of Farmington Hills has suspended several outdoor activities.

The following facilities and events have been canceled:

Rochester Hills Closes Spencer Beach

Officials in Rochester Hills announced the temporary closure of Spencer Beach, citing poor environmental conditions caused by wildfire smoke.

Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor recreation until air quality improves.

Henry Ford Attractions Temporarily Closed

The Henry Ford announced the closure of two of its most popular attractions:

  • Greenfield Village
  • Ford Rouge Factory Tour

Officials said both locations would remain closed while hazardous air quality persists.

Red Oaks Waterpark Shuts Down

Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights has also suspended operations for the day because of the smoke-filled conditions affecting the region.

Outdoor Sports and Recreation Events Canceled

Several recreational organizations have canceled planned outdoor activities.

Come Play Detroit announced that all of its outdoor sports leagues scheduled for Thursday have been canceled.

Similarly, Slow Roll Detroit, the city’s popular weekly community bike ride, has canceled Thursday’s event due to health concerns related to the air quality.

CJ Barrymore’s Closes Outdoor Attractions

Entertainment venue CJ Barrymore’s has temporarily closed all outdoor attractions.

However, officials confirmed that indoor attractions remain open for guests.

Royal Oak Suspends Outdoor Programming

The City of Royal Oak has also taken precautionary measures.

Officials announced the following closures and cancellations:

  • Normandy Oaks Splashpad closed
  • All outdoor city programming has been canceled
  • July 16 concert at Centennial Commons canceled

Residents are encouraged to monitor city updates for information regarding future programming.

Smoke Expected to Linger

Weather officials say wildfire smoke from Northern Ontario is expected to remain over southeast Michigan for at least the next couple of days, with air quality likely to stay at unhealthy levels.

Health officials continue to advise residents—especially children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions—to limit outdoor activities, remain indoors when possible, and monitor local air quality advisories until conditions improve.

Authorities say additional closures or cancellations may be announced if the smoke persists or air quality worsens.
